■About the Tamagawa Sky Bridge
The Tamagawa Sky Bridge connects Kawasaki Tonomachi with Haneda Airport, located in the "Haneda Airport - South, Kawasaki Tonomachi, and Daishi-Okawa Region," a designated urban regeneration emergency development area that straddles prefectural borders. Aiming to create a sense of openness on the bridge, a sense of unity with the natural environment, and a reduced sense of oppression in the river space, the bridge's symbolism as the first bridge over the Tamagawa and its maintenance have been given the utmost consideration. Japan's largest three-span continuous box girder bridge with a 240m central span has been realized with a graceful, flowing silhouette that harmonizes with the majestic, horizontal landscape. The open bridge space offers panoramic views of the rich natural environment, planes taking off and landing, the city, the mountains, and Tokyo Bay downstream.

■Evaluation points
The award was given to the realization of a graceful and flowing silhouette that does not give the impression of physical size, while reflecting consideration for the ecosystem and landscape. The design of the girder bridge and the construction method have been highly praised for the ingenuity used throughout to minimize disturbance to the ecosystem while maintaining a simple appearance.

The Tamagawa Sky Bridge also won Tanaka Prize (Works Prize) from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 2021.
