We have launched a proof-of-concept (PoC) for applying mathematical optimization technology to the social infrastructure sector. Using JijZept, we will verify mathematical optimization techniques for disaster prevention and infrastructure investment planning, with a view to utilizing quantum technology.

■Background and Objectives
In Japan, large-scale disasters are becoming more frequent and severe, and social infrastructure is rapidly aging. This necessitates the development of response plans that make the most of limited resources. Such planning requires considering a vast number of variables and constraints, and involves finding the optimal solution that satisfies all combinations of these conditions simultaneously—an optimization problem.
Mathematical optimization techniques are highly effective methods for large-scale combinatorial optimization problems, and PACIFIC CONSULTANTS is considering applying them, including quantum annealing technology, in the future. Quantum annealing technology is expected to exhibit solution search performance superior to conventional methods, and its application in the social infrastructure sector is considered one of the most promising areas.
We have decided to launch this Proof of Concept (PoC) because we believe that a practical approach to these social challenges is possible through collaboration between PACIFIC CONSULTANTS, which possesses extensive knowledge in social infrastructure fields such as disaster prevention and infrastructure management, and JIJ, which has strengths in cutting-edge mathematical optimization technologies including quantum annealing.
■ Overview of the Proof of Concept (PoC)
In this Proof of Concept (PoC), we will utilize "JijZept," a quantum and classical hybrid mathematical optimization platform developed and provided by JIJ, to construct and solve mathematical models focused on optimizing repair and investment plans for aging infrastructure. We will verify the applicability of mathematical optimization techniques and the accuracy and computational efficiency of the solutions.
Furthermore, JijZept is a platform that supports a variety of quantum and classical computing resources, including gate-based and annealing methods, and the insights gained from this PoC are intended for future application to quantum computers.
■Future developments
Based on the knowledge gained from applying mathematical optimization techniques in this Proof of Concept (PoC), we aim to build a mathematical optimization computing platform capable of addressing diverse social infrastructure challenges, such as transportation planning, logistics planning, and wide-area evacuation planning.
Through this initiative, both companies will lead the social implementation of quantum technology and contribute to the realization of sustainable social infrastructure.
