"BEACH⇔PARK LIVING", a BBQ facility that proposes a new way to spend time in the park, wins the Good Design Award
On October 7, 2022, "BEACH⇔PARK LIVING" won the Good Design Award.
"BEACH⇔PARK LIVING," implemented by the BEACH⇔PARK LIVING Consortium (Representative company: PACIFIC CONSULTANTS CO., LTD. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President & Representative Director: Osamu OMOTO)) at Kanagawa Prefectural Kannonzaki Park (Tatara-Hama Park Site) as Kanagawa Prefecture's first Park-PFI project, has won "Good Design Award 2022" sponsored by Japan Institute of Design Promotion.
■ About the award-winning "BEACH⇔ PARK LIVING"
This project is the first Park-PFI project (Park-PFI *1) in Kanagawa Prefectural Park, with the aim of attracting customers to Kanagawa Prefectural Kannonzaki Park (Yokosuka City) and revitalizing the region.
We have been operating a BBQ site, café, and bar since September 2020 as a "LIVING-like space where you can spend a relaxing time" that proposes new value and ways to enjoy things that have not been found in Kannonzaki Park so far.
■ Design Points
1. Creating new value for the park by creating a living room-like space that makes the most of the existing sea and park environment
- Making the most of the existing topography, the facilities have been positioned to ensure views of the ocean from all sites, and by providing semi-outdoor spaces with decks and roofs, we have created a new, attractive space that resembles a comfortable living room.
- We have created an environmentally friendly space by making maximum use of the existing terrain, existing trees and facilities, and minimizing development.
2. A project to improve the appeal of parks that have been underutilized by utilizing the Park-PFI system, a privately-established, privately-operated system.
- In order to expand the target demographic of park visitors, we have set up 17 unique BBQ sites of 4 types, centered around a cafe and bar that anyone can drop by, with the aim of providing enjoyment for a diverse range of users.
- By developing facilities that can be used in the winter for things like kotatsu and camping, we have created a BBQ facility that can be enjoyed all year round.
- By installing a cafe and bar that beach users can easily use and renovating the toilets to provide shower facilities, we have created an environment where people can easily move between the beach and the park, making it possible to use the beach and the park together.
3. Collaboration with the local community contributes to revitalizing the entire area and improving safety
- Aiming to create an open space that can be used by all local residents, we placed a grass plaza in the center and created a venue for various events and cultural events.
- Taking advantage of the park's location, the site is used as a stage for hula dance class recitals, yoga and SUP experiences, and other projects and activities are carried out in collaboration with local groups, creating a lively atmosphere in the area and providing fun for Kannonzaki.
- We are working together with people in the Kannonzaki area to carry out cleaning activities and secure transportation.
Thanks to these efforts, two years after its opening, and despite the COVID-19 pandemic in FY2021 (JPN), it has contributed to attracting visitors to the area around Kannonzaki Park (Tatara-hama Park Site), improving accessibility and increasing the area's appeal, which led to the facility being recognized as receiving a Good Design Award.
■Good Design Award Jury Evaluation Comments
The excellent design focuses on an area that is close to abundant tourist resources but has become vacant due to low mobility, and effectively disperses facilities that attract many visitors and can be used for events without putting a strain on the natural environment. The comfortable space provided by the deck and tarp has attracted a certain number of visitors even under restrictions on movement due to the spread of COVID-19, and there is a possibility that it will become widely accepted in other regions as an option for outdoor activities for family-sized groups in the future.
